Jenny Snyder Paintings
Art is about raw energy and about the way I encounter people. It is political without meaning to be. Good paintings have music in them and they will tear you up. They are religious, trying to put some kind of face to what's underneath. They provoke. Good paintings break boundaries and eliminate walls. They are a way of meeting people without the politeness. They are animals and when I paint I am prowling and looking to catch things. I spend most of my days rubbing colors into canvases and waiting for light to break through and for color to grab. I am a strenuous painter and I yell at my paintings. I hit them and twist colors about. I redo them until they stop.
Paintings are not meant to be good. There are many other good things to take up time like talking to kind people and inspiring religious services, pretty clothing and birds. All of these things are good, but paintings aren't meant to be good when times are not that good. They should be real and aggressive. Paintings are meant to be laughed at. They are meant to be mean. My paintings are about relationships. They have to be loved or hated. I often paint with the intention of creating anger or vulnerability. All of life these days is politics. So my paintings are about politics. They are about who has power and what we do with power. They are about conflict and about who is excluded. They are antithetical to sleep. Paintings should not be afraid to be funny or trite.
When I paint I look for faces. I am not a person whose good with remembering faces, so when I paint a face I am reaching into an impression and not going for realism. There are plenty of realistic things. Every day is realistic. Realistic is different from real. Realistic is a summation. Real, on the other hand, is truth. People lie all the time. Politics is filled with lies. Religion is filled with lies. Good paintings tell the truth, and truth isn't always nice. Paintings are, above all, not meant to be nice. They should break down doors or help you go to sleep. These are the rubrics of paintings.
